When this 16,765 square foot, three-story structure was built in 1904, it was the Kingstree Hardware Company. Today, it is known locally as the Old Belk Building and serves the Williamsburg County Department of Social Services. Renovation was completed in September 2015 at a cost of $1.85 million. Located on Hampton Avenue, it is one of 48 properties on the National Historic Register as part of the Kingstree Historic District. Plans were developed by Tych & Walker Architects to reinforce and preserve the facade while the remainder of the structure was rebuilt.
This is the first in a series on historic buildings where Coastal Structures Corporation has served as general contractor. The projects are all unique and have been challenging. Each represent an effort to make the building useful while preserving as much as possible and being sensitive to the use of the right building materials and techniques.
